What I was not expecting to learn in class this week was French. Mise-en-Scene was my class's next topic. I was not familiar with the term before this week but after learning about it and viewing some examples I now understand just how important it is. For those who ad unfamiliar, mise-en-scene is a term that refers to the arrangement and prop choices that are used in films. Props, costumes, make-up and décor are all included in mise-en-scene. To help our class understand and pick up on mise-en-scene, Mr. Z assigned us a chart to fill out to help analyses the mise-en-scene in a scene of our choice. I picked the film "Knives Out" and specifically the scene where detective Blanc pieces together what truly happened on the night of the crime. I picked a "who-dunit" mystery since most of the time the film makers leave clues as to who is the real killer in the character's clothing, make-up, habits, and personal possessions. Here is the link to my chart if you would like to check it out Mise en Scene analysis chart. Applying mise-en-scene will be critical to my film opening so I will definitely revisit this chapter while planning it out.
