This week my class spent it going over narratives. Mr. Z assigned us three activities which went over narrative structure, narrative theories, character types, and character arcs. We were instructed to pick one long-form TV drama series so I picked "The Last of Us." I chose this show not only because I really enjoyed it but because each episode has its own story arc and characters that all tie into the main arc of Joel and Ellie traveling the country in hopes of finding a cure. The theories we covered in class were Propp's theory on character types and Todorov's theory about narrative structure. I found these two theories a lot easier to grasp than the last three my class went over (which I also mentioned in my last post). I think it is because these theories have very clear guidelines as to what fits in the mold and what does not. It is very helpful for me at least because it allows me to put a word to describe a specific character or storyline. I was also surprised by Propp's theory and just how many characters in media fit into at least one of the eight character types, I will most definitely be categorizing the characters of the next show I watch to see how many fit in the eight different types. Overall, I think this was one of my favorite units so far but I am excited for our next topic of representation! Down below should be the links to my research from this week so feel free to take a gander. I hope you have a great rest of your day!
